Britons hit by whiplash epidemic
14 November 2008 15:56
Hundreds of thousands of Britons are claiming on their insurance every year in what experts are describing as a 'whiplash epidemic'.
Research by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has found that nearly 450,000 made a claim for whiplash and related neck ailments during 2007, at a cost of £2 billion.
Startlingly, three quarters of all motoring personal injury claims now involve whiplash - often as a result of careless driving.
Frances Browning, a spokeswoman for Direct Line, said that its own study had found 93 per cent of motorists adhering to the Highway Code were bullied into speeding by tailgaters.
She added that motorists needed to understand that tailgating can cause increased stress, which in turn can lead to dangerous scenarios and the frightening possibility of whiplash.
According to the ABI, many cases of whiplash result in delayed legal proceedings and a long road to recovery.
