Brits failing to check fire hazards in home

10 November 2008 15:51

Two in five Brits are failing to regularly check their home for fire hazards, an investigation has revealed.

What's more, the research by Halifax home insurance also found that nearly 70 per cent of people in the UK would panic and not know what to do in the event of a fire.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax home insurance, said that the leading causes of home fires were cooking, heating and electrical - with a worrying number of respondents admitting they don’t regularly check these hazards.

He added that to avoid risking injury to yourself - or losing items that can't be replaced - the group urged people to thoroughly assess their homes for fire risks.

For those items that can be replaced, the company urges home owners to ensure they are fully covered by their insurance policy.

With Halifax home insurance, there is no limit on the amount covered, so policy holders will never find themselves under-insured.
