Claims could rocket on Bonfire night, says insurer

4 November 2008 15:47

A major British insurer has advised homeowners to take care this Bonfire night on the back of worrying statistics.

An investigation by Tesco personal finance discovered that claims on November 5th rocket by an average 240 per cent.

The research shows that opportunist burglars see the night as a good time to strike, but Tesco has also warned homeowners of the destructive power of fireworks when it comes to personal property.

Head of home insurance at Tesco personal finance, Jim Bruce, said that while Bonfire night was an enjoyable time of the year for the whole family, it was necessary to take precautions to protect both yourselves and your property.

In particular, he added, it was vital that revellers followed the fireworks code, which offers a number of safety tips; such as never putting a firework in your pocket or throwing them by hand.

Last month, Tesco revealed that home insurance claims surge by an average of 150 per cent on Halloween.
