Don't buy unnecessary insurance, consumers warned

5 November 2008 17:54

Householders across the UK should be wary of purchasing insurance policies that they don't need in the weeks leading up to the festive period.

That is according to esure, which has warned consumers that they should not always buy insurance that is offered to them with various gifts such as jewellery or mobile phones.

Research conducted by the insurance firm found that 23 per cent of British people would purchase insurance that they didn't actually need to cover a gift in the event of it being lost, stolen or broken.

However, esure noted that many items will already be covered under another policy already taken out by the shopper.

Mike Pickard of esure said that it was important not to buy insurance policies that were unnecessary at the moment because of the current financial situation.

The company suggested various ways to avoid doubling up on a policy, such as checking to see what is covered by your home insurance and ignoring the sales pitch of retailers.
