Home insurance failing to cover students
11 September 2008 11:00
A substantial number of home insurance products do not entail cover for any members of the household who are studying a way from home, a new report has warned.
One in three university students fall victim to some form of crime each year, of which burglary is the most common, due to the value of the items students keep in their accommodation and the long amounts of time that they leave their digs unoccupied for.
This makes it all the more concerning that one in four home insurance products do not extend their cover to students who do live away from home during term-time, according to Sainsbury's Bank's new data, while a further one in three have limits of £3,750 or less.
home insurance manager Neil Laird advised students to check if their parents' home policies offer them adequate cover while studying away before buying cover themselves, but also urged them not to forego insurance, regardless of the other costs they face.
This follows a recent poll by esure, which revealed that one in four parents have not even thought about obtaining insurance for their children while they are at university, with a further one in eight assuming they will be covered under their own home insurance deal.
