Lender urges parents to insure students

23 September 2008 15:01

Parents should remember to ensure that their children have adequate contents insurance when at university, a major lender has advised.

The Nationwide Building Society suggests that parents check to see if their children are covered by their home insurance policy before they leave home in the coming weeks.

The lender has also provided a set of tips for this year's freshers, which include locking windows and doors when leaving home and marking possessions with your student number and initials.

Robin Bailey, Nationwide's insurance director, said that with the cost of tuition and accommodation fees and books, university has become a very expensive experience for both parents and students.

Because of this, according to Mr Bailey, it is easier for parents to overlook the importance of contents insurance and take the risk that they will never need to make a claim.

The lender estimates that most students have about £1,500 worth of valuables while at university, including expensive items such as a computer and television.
