Pet insurance 'best gift' this Christmas

22 December 2008 17:00

Up to a third of Britons are considering giving friends or family a pet this Christmas, a study has shown.

While domestic animals can provide hours of fun, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is concerned that many are unaware of the costs involved in looking after a pet.

In response to this figure, the ABI has advised anyone giving or receiving a gift to ensure they have comprehensive animal insurance.

Director of general insurance and health at the ABI, Nick Starling, commented that while owning a pet could be extraordinarily rewarding, bills for treatments could potentially run into thousands of pounds.

He added that having comprehensive pet insurance was vital during times of economic downturn, as it gave animal lovers peace of mind that their furry friends will get the best treatment available.

An investigation by Halifax last week found that an increasing number of Britons were unsure of how well insured their home and its contents were.
