Travel insurance claims surge, research shows
16 December 2008 16:57
The number of winter sports-related travel insurance claims being made has soared, according to new statistics.
Research by Sainsbury's travel insurance found that medical expenses paid for such injuries rose by 11 per cent between 2007 and 2008.
The group has said that those without cover are playing a dangerous game, with average claims in countries such as the US and Canada being around the £3,000 mark.
Sam Marrs, manager of Sainsbury's travel insurance, reiterated that when journeying in mainland Europe, it is essential that you have a European Health insurance Card (EHIC) and separate travel cover.
He added that while a EHIC would entitle you to a degree of health care in the country you were visiting, it was important to keep in mind medical costs can easily go into thousands of pounds, highlighting the importance of dedicated travel insurance.
Last year, the consumer magazine Your Money named Sainsbury's the Best Online travel insurance Provider.
