Travellers urged to ask for insurance this Christmas
3 December 2008 16:37
Thousands of independent travellers could be putting their Christmas festivities at risk by not taking out insurance, statistics have shown.
Research by Marks and Spencer Money has found that out of the one million Britons set to journey overseas this Christmas, about 20 per cent will do so without travel insurance.
With the increasing popularly of do-it-yourself and the credit crunch, the temptation is even greater to forego such a vital product.
insurance manager for Marks and Spencer Money, Judith Roberts, said that for the majority of people the festive season is about spending time with family and friends, even if it means travelling overseas.
She added that the company's new travel insurance made allowances for more unforeseen circumstances, such as the cancellation of a trip incurring costs for connecting flights or accommodation.
Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that in the last three months of 2007, more than 2.8 million visits abroad were made by Britons to visit relatives or friends.
